Mark E. Glogowski (July 30, 1943—June 9, 2024) was an American chemist, author and Libertarian Party activist from New York. He was Chair of the Libertarian Party of New York from 2015 to 2018. He ran for New York State Assembly in 2012, 2014, 2018, and 2020.

Biography

Early Life and career

Mark E. Glogowski was born on July 30, 1943 in Rochester, New York, a son of Joseph Thomas and Rita Mary (Schwarzmeier) Glogowski. He attended Spencerport Central High School, received a B.S. in Chemistry at the University of Rochester in 1967, his Master of Science degree in Chemistry at the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1972, and his PhD in Chemistry at the University of Arizona, Tucson in 1976.^[1] He went on to work at Eastman Kodak for 32 years as a chemist.

He was married to Kathleen Miller on August 26, 1967. They had two daughters.

Politics

From 1981 to 1983, he was a Republican Town Leader in Hamilin. In 1995, he ran in the Republican primary in a three-way race for two seats on the Town of Hamilin Council. He lost in the primary, having recieved 158 votes, while his opponents, Jeffrey J. Simek (328 votes) and Edward D. Evans (259 votes) won the primary.

In 2009, he registered Libertarian and joined the Libertarian Party (State and National levels), in 2011 published The Political Primer: Fundamentals of Politics, in 2012 and 2014 ran for NYS Assembly (139th district).

In 2015, Glogowski ran for Chair of the Libertarian Party of New York at the State Convention in Rochester. He was ultimately elected to three terms, serving until 2018. In 2018, he sought election but was defeated by Jim Rosenbeck at the State Convention. During his tenure, he advocated for requiring members be enrolled with the Libertarian Party and sought to ensure the Board of Elections properly enrolled Libertarians.

During the 2018 election, he ran for State Assembly and collected over 2,000 signatures, which also helped get Larry Sharpe on the ballot. After the election when the party became a recognized party in New York State, he joined the Rules Committee to draft rules for the new party. He became a member of the Interim State Committee on February 9, 2024, which served until the convention in September 2020.

On March 4, 2019, he was elected Chair of the Free Libertarian Party, Inc., the corporate entity of the Libertarian Party of New York. During that same convention, the Interim State Committee succeeded as the governing body of the Libertarian Party of New York. Glogowski proposed converting the corporation into a PAC under the proposed name Libertarian Advocates of New York, but the membership of the corporation opted to dissolve in November 2019.

Glogowski was elected to the State Committee in 2020 as a representative from Judicial District 7. He ran again in 2022 with his slate, which he compiled. He served on the State Committee until he resigned due to health reasons in 2023. During that time, he served on the Rules Committee and the Platform Committee. He served as Chair of the Platform Committee for a time.

Despite his ill health, he had continued interest in the party and watched the entirety of the stream of the final day of the National Convention 2024 on May 26, 2024.

Death and Legacy

Glogowski died on June 9, 2024 at the age of 80 after a battle with cancer. His obituary noted, "Throughout his life he was involved in many social groups including Toastmasters and the Knights of Columbus. Mark was involved with various political groups over the years, most recently the NYS Libertarian Party, educating people on the importance of their vote and the political system. Mark enjoyed fishing, political discussions and spending time with family."
