Kenneth Martin Mattes (b. 26 Nov. 1979) is a precinct committeeman and Chapter Secretary for the McHenry County Libertarians in northern Illinois. Mattes is a transportation entrepreneur in the same-day delivery industry and an FAA licensed commercial drone pilot.
Ken was introduced to libertarianism by his late best friend Brian who had found the Neal Boortz show on the radio by accident. Boortz later described a call to the show from Ken as "serendipitous" when Ken asked Neal what he thought of Gary Johnson, whom Neal was about to mention he had booked as a guest. Ken was a regular contributor to the Michael Jae Experiment on local station 98.3 WRLR, albeit very briefly.
Ken was a renegade volunteer supporter of Johnson in 2016, placing yard signs and collecting ballot petition signatures without being asked to by anybody except for the state website. He officially joined the Libertarian party in 2017 and surreptitiously collected signatures again in 2018 and 2020. Ken volunteered for and donated to the campaigns of Jo Jorgensen, Danny Malouf, and William Redpath. When McHenry County began to recognize LP as an established party in 2020, Ken stepped forward to become a precinct committeeman and quickly became chapter secretary as well. His top platform position is advancement of Ranked Choice Voting.
Ken is an active supporter of The Red Cross via frequent blood donations and he also volunteers for the McHenry County Emergency Management Agency. He enjoys bowling and disc golf, and is a distant relative of British Prime Minister Charles Watson-Wentworth. Ken's father Paul was a notable actor in many theatrical productions at the Woodstock Opera House. Ken's second home is in Florida, where Paul and Ken both contribute to the Drama Club established by Paul at the Heritage Pines retirement community in suburban Tampa.
