Michael Robert Rebmann (August 18, 1957—August 15, 2024) was a Libertarian Party activist from New York, who served on the Libertarian Party of New York State Committee from 2021 until his death in 2024. He enjoyed camping and nature photography, and hoped that one day, New York would pivot from being one of the most unfree states to the freest.
Biography
Early Life and Career
Michael Robert Rebmann was born on August 18, 1957, in Alden, New York, a son of Robert Frederick Rebmann (1933—2018) and Elizabeth Marie Gyoerkoe Rebmann (1937—2014). He attended Alden Senior High School, graduating in the class of 1975. He earned an Associate's in Applied Science degree for paralegal studies from Erie Community College City Campus in 2005 and afterward worked as a freelance paralegal. He worked in the hospitality industry, as the General Manager at the Boulevard Inn from May 2007 to April 2016 and as the General Manager at the Aartpark Hotel Inn at Lewiston from April 2016 to March 2017. He worked as a Solutions Specialist at Version from December 2017 until his retirement in March 2021. Upon retirement, he dedicated fulltime to liberty activism.
Libertarian Party
Rebmann joined the National Libertarian Party on October 31, 2019. He became the Erie County Mises Caucus Organizer in May 2021. He was elected to fill a vacancy on the State Committee of the Libertarian Party of New York on November 7, 2021, during the Empire State Freedom Summit. In 2022, he became an organizer for the New York State Mises Caucus, regularly posting on their social media.
Rebmann served as Treasurer of the Erie County Libertarian Party from October 2, 2022, until his resignation on June 26, 2023.
Rebmann was involved in managing local campaigns, including Charles Roggen's campaign for Akron Town Trustee in 2023 and 2024 and Wendi Szabo's campaign for Royalton Town Council in 2023.
In addition to the State Committee, Rebmann also served on the Libertarian Party of New York's Platform and Rules Committees.
In late 2023, he was appointed Chair of the Nominating Convention Organizing Committee that organized the New York Nominating Convention 2024, which was a huge success. It consisted of the nominating of New York's placeholder candidates and a Presidential debate. The event was the LPNY's most successful and most profitable event in recent years.
In 2024, he was the New York State Organizer for Michael Rectenwald's campaign for President. At the National Convention 2024, he gave a nominating speech for Rectenwald. Despite being confined to a wheelchair, he miraculously stood up at the podium to deliver a heartfelt speech, which inspired many.
He attended PorcFest in June 2024.
Death and Legacy
Rebmann fought a battle with cancer and passed away on August 15, 2024, at the age of 66, just a few days before his 67th birthday. His last years were marked by both personal and political achievements, as well as his courage in facing his illness.
Michael Rectenwald, the presidential candidate for whom Rebmann gave the nomination speech, expressed his deep sorrow upon hearing the news of Rebmann's passing: "I am so saddened by this news that I can't quite put my thoughts together here. I didn't know Michael Rebmann very long, but upon getting to know him, he soon became one of my greatest heroes. He was an indefatigable freedom fighter until the very end. I will be forever honored that he delivered a nomination speech for me at the LP convention. May his soul soar now that he has reached the Great Land of Liberty. God bless you, Michael." — Michael Rectenwald, August 15, 2024 (via X).
Spike Cohen, the Libertarian Party's 2020 nominee for Vice President said "It was an honor to see Michael at the Convention and at PorcFest earlier this year, and to talk and text with him these past few months. He was a great figure in this movement, and he managed his final days with an inspiring bravery and grace. He told me "I wanted to have a good LPNY convention, I wanted to get to National, and I wanted to experience PorcFest. And now that I've done all of those things, I'm happy and ready." Rest in Peace, Michael. Your memory will be a great blessing."
