Ed Clark ran for governor of California in 1978. As the Libertarian Party was not yet a qualified party in California, he appeared on the ballot as an independent, but he promoted himself as a Libertarian candidate. He received 377,960 votes (5.46%), which is still a record for a Libertarian candidate for this office.
