James Gholston

James Gholston (born 1970), known as Strangelv, is a Libertarian Party activist notable for his long tenure on the Libertarian Party of Texas State Libertarian Executive Committee (SLEC) from 2001 to 2018—one of its longest-serving members—and his work as an LPedia administrator since 2006. Through Libertarian Statue Press, he’s advocated for the Classical Statue Logo against the 2016 LNC eagle logo’s aggressive and nationalistic symbolism.

Early Life and Background

Gholston served in the United States Air Force from 1988 to 1992 at Lowry AFB (Colorado), Zweibrücken AB, and Bitburg AB (Germany) in supply roles. His activism began in 1994 with the founding of NT Libertarians at the University of North Texas.

Libertarian Party Involvement

Gholston chaired NT Libertarians from 1994 to 1998—a small group with rotating members—and later served Denton County LP in multiple roles: Chair (2000-2002, 2007-2010), Vice-Chair (pre-2000), Corresponding Secretary (2002), Recording Secretary (2005-2006), and At-Large/Precinct Representative (2014+).

He joined the Libertarian Party of Texas SLEC in 2001, serving until 2018, and contributed to the Rules (2002, 2014) and Platform (2002) committees—the latter faltering due to quorum loss. He attended LPTexas conventions from 2002 to 2022 (except 2010, alternate 2014—unseated) and national conventions from 2002 to 2022 (alternate 2022—Sparks, NV; online 2020). He’s been a member of the LPHPC since 2017 and Radical Caucus At-Large Director since 2016.

Gholston resigned from Denton County LP in 2022 and SLEC in 2018, both times rejecting the LNC’s 2016 eagle logo adoption—favoring the Classical Statue Logo for its non-aggressive stance.

Campaigns and Initiatives

Gholston ran for Denton City Council in 2003 and US House TX-26 in 2004.

He founded Signs of Texas Liberty PAC (SIGLIB) in 2005 (Treasurer since 2012, TEC filer—lost `siglibpac.org`), Texas Candidates for Liberty PAC (CANDLIB) in 2014 (Treasurer), and Signs of Freedom 527 (SIGFREE) in 2022 (Treasurer) for issue signs. In 2012, his ‘Re-Elect No One’ signs at the LNC convention—alongside Sparkman and Sarwark—helped shift influence from the Hooded Keyholders faction, aiding Geoff Neale’s election over Mark Rutherford. He launched Libertarian Statue Press (LSP) in 2015 to promote the Classical Statue Logo.

Projects

Since 2006, Gholston has been an LPedia administrator, later gaining bureaucrat status, contributing to its growth and spam defense.

Other Activities

Gholston served the Moon Society as Director (2006-2009, 2017-present) and Secretary (2013-2017). He briefly led Dimensionality, a game company founded in 1995, serving as president since 1998.
