LP endorsed candidates were checked against this list for 2010 - 2014: http://www.lp.org/election-results
Or, when available, against old issues of: http://ballot-access.org/print-issues/
Candidates listed on the ballot as Independents are noted with (I) or, in the 2012 Maine election, Independent For Liberty (IFL).

There are almost certainly write in candidates missing and, in the early years, possibly other LP endorsed candidates who were listed on the ballot as Independent.

Occasionally there are special elections to replace a Senator other than in the regularly scheduled 6 year cycle. This can show up as either as an election when there should not have been one, such as Hawaii in 1990 and 2014 or Delaware in 2010, or as two elections in the same year, such as California in 1992 and New York in 2010. If the LP did not compete in a special election, it was ignored. If there was a special election in what would normally be an off year in which the LP fielded no candidate, it is marked as "no election."

Kept Off of the Ballot Candidates

One of the hardest candidate types to find out about is when the candidate is the de jure or at least de facto nominee but was kept off of the ballot when ballot access efforts were unsuccessful. Or worst of all, the candidate was trying to run as an independent and/or write-in and the petition effort was unsuccessful, which -- short of a mention in a searchable archived newspaper or someone being able to remember -- may already be lost to recorded history. An example of a candidate in this category (not US Senate) would be Rob Harrison.

What might be a better short name for this category of candidate than Kept Off Ballot?

"No Ballot Access" was what I used on the Presidential election results page. But I am not convinced that candidates who were not eligible to receive votes in a general election should be listed here. I figured they should just be given a mention on their respective state pages. Not a big deal, either way.
