Steven E. Haskett is a long time Libertarian who ran for Texas State Senator, District 14 in 2022.
Steven Haskett is a Texas native and longtime Austin resident. Born in Tyler, Texas, his early years included time living in Algiers, Paris (France, not Texas), and El Dorado, Arkansas. In El Dorado, he became an Eagle Scout and played viola in the local symphony. He worked summers on wheat farms on the Oklahoma-Kansas border to send himself to the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan, where he graduated high school.
Post-secondary education includes Music Performance/Pedagogy (U. of Evansville). He moved to Midland, TX where he played with the Midland-Odessa Symphony while working in the oil fields of the Permian Basin. After a couple of years he moved to College Station to earn his degree in Petroleum Engineering, a field in which he is a published author. While a student he started his first business, the “Aggies Over Texas” skydiving school in Bryan. The operation was featured in Parachutist Magazine as “The Best Little Dropzone in Texas”. While earning his Petroleum Engineering degree at Texas A&M, he was also the principal violist with the symphony, and was competing nationally and internationally as a skydiver. His business hosted and co-produced the first of several World Freestyle Skydiving Competitions, shown on ESPN.
Graduating in the middle of a collapse in the oil industry, Steven went on to a career as a contract programmer. He worked across many industries both in Austin and abroad. For about 8 years, he was “adventure programming” in Iraq and Afghanistan, making over a dozen extended trips.
Steven and his family bought and renovated a home in central Mexico where he learned to speak some Spanish. His wife Mary is an entrepreneur and they have two daughters. In his time off, Steven enjoys flying the ‘66 Cessna he’s flown since his college skydiving days. He regularly volunteers to fly “Angel Flight” patients from rural Texas to and from their treatments.
