Phillip Alan "Phil" Miller (February 6, 1955—June 2, 2024) was a Libertarian Party activist. He served as County Chair and represented the party on CNN during Libertarian Conventions. Miller was also a member of the LP National Strategic Planning Team in the early 2000s and as a member of the National Judicial Committee from 2004 to 2006.
Biography
Early Life and Career
Miller was born on February 6, 1955 in Caro, Michigan, and grew up in Owosso and Concord, Michigan. He graduated from Gladwin High School in 1973 and earned a degree in Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Management from Michigan State University in 1977.
Miller's professional career included roles with Aramark, Radio Shack Computers, Klosterman's, and Greenfield Ponderosa. His longest tenure was with Sysco Food Services, where he worked for 25 years, servicing some of their largest national customers.
Politics
Miller was involved in the Libertarian Party. He ran for State House in Indiana in 1998. He served as County Chair of the Hancock County Libertarian Party and represented the party on CNN during Libertarian Conventions. Miller was also a member of the LP National Strategic Planning Team in the early 2000s.
Miller served on the Greenfield City Council from 2000 to 2003 as an elected Libertarian. He also ran for state legislature and mayor of Greenfield, spreading the message of liberty and garnering high vote totals in every campaign. While serving on the city council, he was a principled vote for the taxpayers of Greenfield, always sticking with principle and frequently casting a lone “no” vote to represent taxpayers.
Community Involvement
Miller was involved in his community and church. He served on the Greenfield City Council from 2000 to 2003. At St. James Lutheran Church, he held positions as Administrative Assistant and President on the Church Council. He was a member of the Lions Club, serving as Vice President, President, and Treasurer. He also served on the Love INC Board for approximately 10 years, including terms as Vice President and President.
Personal Life
Phillip Alan Miller married Terry Lynn Waldo in 1978. The couple had three children: Caitlin, Ryan, and Ziena, and one grandson, Jacob. Miller collected over 10,000 sugar packets, a collection featured on WISH-TV and in the book "Indiana Curiosities" by Dick Wolfsie.
Phillip Alan Miller passed away on June 2, 2024, at the age of 69. He was preceded in death by his parents, John William Miller and Lorraine Beth Miller. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Terry Lynn Miller, their children Caitlin, Ryan, and Ziena, and grandson Jacob. He is also survived by his sister Paula Ross, brother Aaron Miller, and several nieces and nephews.
Legacy
The Libertarian Party of Indiana's award Phil Miller Candidate of the Year is named after him. On his passing, LPIN Chair Evan McMahon stated: “Phil Miller was a great Libertarian and a longtime leader in our party. He brought countless people into the Libertarian Party. He served his community and our party with great grace and class. He was a sounding board for many and the sage in our party. He continues to be an inspiration to Libertarians seeking public office. We will miss him greatly.”
