Nick Karem
Nicholas "Nick" Phillip Karem (June 8, 1943 - November 25, 2023) was a libertarian activist from Kentucky, who once served as Treasurer of the Libertarian Party of Kentucky. He will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to the principles of liberty and his many contributions to the Libertarian Party of Kentucky.
Early Life and Education
Early Years
Karem was born on June 8, 1943, in Louisville, Kentucky, to parents Amelia and Phillip Karem.
Education
Karem was a member of the first graduating class at Seneca High School in 1961. He graduated from Western Kentucky University in 1969 after returning home from serving in the Air Force. He also spent time at the University of Louisville and the University of Maryland.
Marriage
While stationed in Spain during his service in the Air Force, Karem met Marina Del Negro, his future wife. They were married in Gibraltar in 1967.
Career
Karem made a successful career as an insurance agent, working for Old Commonwealth Insurance in St. Matthews and later for Lawrence, Johnson, Walker Insurance. His professional background in the insurance industry contributed to his financial expertise and understanding of free-market principles.
Libertarian Activism
Throughout his life, Nicholas Phillip Karem was an enthusiastic libertarian activist. He was an active member of the Libertarian Party of Kentucky and played a significant role in promoting libertarian ideals.
Influence on Ken Moellman
Ken Moellman, a fellow libertarian activist, acknowledged Karem's influence on his own political journey. Moellman stated, "Nick was the person who helped me understand what was going on at my first LP national convention, in 2006. I went to get training for campaign management, but that training wasn't offered. I did learn a lot about leading a group of Libertarians, though, and a number of those lessons are still relevant today."
Athletics
Nick Karem was not only passionate about libertarian politics but also an avid runner. He was a member of the "Marathon Maniacs" and completed an impressive total of 246 marathons during his lifetime. Notably, he achieved membership in the exclusive "50 States club" twice, demonstrating his dedication and endurance as a long-distance runner.
