Marjorie "Maggie" Kohls (July 12, 1946 – February 3, 2024) was a delegate of the Libertarian Party of North Dakota at the 2018 National Convention and a respected legal professional in North Dakota's judicial system.
Life and Career
Born on July 12, 1946, Kohls was a single mother who pursued her academic and professional dreams with determination. She earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees in civil engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology, later achieving her law degree at the age of 60 from the Chicago-Kent College of Law.
Moving to North Dakota, Kohls served as a prosecutor before becoming a public defender at the Standing Rock Indian Reservation Tribal Court. She was known for her feisty and spirited nature, especially during her 13-month battle with cancer which ended on February 3, 2024.
Community and Political Engagement
Kohls was an active participant in her community, contributing to various groups such as Mensa, the League of Women Voters, and the Libertarian Party. She also engaged with the Dakota Zoo, local bowling leagues, and several book clubs. Kohls was a fierce advocate for individual rights and encouraged others to stand up for their beliefs.
Kohls is survived by her daughters, Kimberly Kohls and Trisha Pergande (Ron); grandchildren, Canyon and Presley; and sister, Diana Reep.
