The Libertarian Medical Freedom Caucus was founded by Dr. Irene Mavrakakis, MD, and Brittany Kosin, RN, in 2024 to advocate for medical freedom and individual choice in healthcare within the broader Libertarian movement and to encourage active participation in the Libertarian Party. The caucus serves as the voice for those prioritizing medical freedom and autonomy in healthcare decisions. The organization is based on the principle that Libertarianism inherently supports the right to make personal medical choices without government interference.

Originally considered to be named the "LP Medical Autonomy Caucus," the name "Medical Freedom Caucus" was ultimately chosen by caucus founder/chair Brittany Kosin because "Medical freedom embodies the essence of individual choice and liberty."

Platform

Statement of Purpose: The Libertarian Party Medical Freedom Caucus believes in the inherent right of individuals to make informed decisions about their health, medical care, and bodily autonomy without coercive interference from the government. We advocate for a healthcare system that prioritizes patient choice, transparent information, and access to a full spectrum of medical treatments. Our platform is built on the foundation of liberty, personal responsibility, and the non-aggression principle, aiming to foster a society where individuals are free to pursue their health and wellness paths.

The Four-Point Strategy

  • Expanding the Party's Brand on Medical Freedom
    • Promote the Libertarian Party as the leading advocate for medical freedom and individual healthcare choice.
    • Develop and distribute educational materials that highlight the party's commitment to medical autonomy.
    • Engage in public relations campaigns to raise awareness about the party's stance on medical freedom and attract new supporters.
  • Candidates
    • Train, equip, and support local candidates committed to medical freedom and individual choice in healthcare.
    • Volunteer and provide financial support for candidates running for offices that have the authority to influence healthcare policy and liberty issues.
    • Ensure that high-visibility, challenging races, such as those for president or governor, are led by candidates and campaign teams that effectively convey the message of medical freedom.
  • Issue Coalitions
    • Create initiatives and build relationships with organizations, elected officials, and individuals who support medical freedom and libertarian healthcare positions.
    • Coordinate with these allies to achieve libertarian political outcomes in healthcare whenever possible.
  • Legislative Action
    • Advocate for and support legislation that protects and expands medical freedom and individual choice in healthcare.
    • Work with legislators to draft and promote bills that align with libertarian principles of healthcare.
    • Monitor and respond to legislative developments that impact medical freedom, ensuring that the voices of those who prioritize individual healthcare rights are heard and represented.

Our Core Principles

  • Empowering Medical Autonomy: Individuals have the inherent right to select their healthcare, treatments, and procedures based on their personal beliefs and needs. Opposing Government Overreach: Government mandates and restrictions on healthcare choices are an infringement on personal autonomy and liberty.
  • Championing Informed Consent: Informed consent is fundamentally tied to bodily autonomy and is considered the standard of care. It involves providing patients with essential information, including potential risks and benefits regarding medical procedures, treatments, genetic testing, or clinical trials. Full disclosure of these risks is crucial. The ability to decline without force or coercion is critical for proper informed consent. This process allows patients to decide if a medical procedure is right for them, weighing the risks and selecting the doctors they believe are the most qualified. Choosing to decline a medical intervention must not lead to any subsequent infringement of one's rights to life, liberty, property, and the pursuit of happiness. These are constitutional rights that must not be infringed. Informed consent is a foundational principle of medical care in the US, affirming that every individual has the right to accept or decline any medical intervention without coercion.
  • Constitutional Safeguards for Medical Freedom: The Declaration of Independence and the 14th Amendment protect the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, which encompasses the freedom to make personal medical choices. Any governmental interference with these rights is unconstitutional. Additionally, the Federal Government must not delegate unconstitutional powers to agencies like the HHS, CDC, FDA, and WHO.
  • Advocating for a 28th Amendment: We support the introduction of a 28th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution that explicitly protects medical freedom, ensuring that no government entity can impede individual medical choices or privacy. We do not advocate for a convention of states due to the risk of other amendments being introduced that could undermine Americans' individual liberties. Instead, we support the adoption of this amendment through the process of both chambers passing it with a two-thirds vote.
  • Defending Bodily Autonomy and Personal Rights: We assert the right to govern one’s body without coercion or force, emphasizing sovereignty over personal medical decisions. We strongly oppose all medical mandates and forced vaccinations, declaring them a violation of individual rights.
  • Ensuring Access to Diverse Healthcare Options: Individuals should have unrestricted access to alternative treatments, therapies, and healthcare providers, ensuring the freedom to choose treatments that best suit their needs. Healthcare decisions should be made exclusively between patients and their chosen healthcare providers without government interference. We support a free-market healthcare system that encourages competition and innovation, promoting better outcomes and more options for all.
  • Access to Alternative and Experimental Treatments: Patients should have the right to access alternative and experimental treatments that they believe could improve their health or quality of life, without excessive governmental restrictions. This ensures that individuals can explore all possible options for their well-being without undue interference.
  • Protecting Privacy and Data Security: We strongly oppose the creation and maintenance of any government or private vaccine databases and advocate for measures that prevent the tracking and recording of vaccination status, thereby safeguarding individual medical freedom.
  • Anti-Discrimination Measures: We strongly advocate for comprehensive anti-discrimination measures to ensure that no person faces unfair treatment or bias based on their vaccination status or medical history. This includes protecting individuals in all areas of public life, such as employment, education, healthcare, and access to services. By safeguarding these rights, we aim to promote a society where personal medical choices are respected and everyone is treated with equal dignity and fairness, regardless of their health decisions.
  • Advocating for Food Freedom: We believe that food freedom is integral to medical freedom, advocating for the right to grow and sell food without government intervention. By supporting these rights, we ensure that individuals have the autonomy to make decisions about their food sources, which is essential for maintaining personal health and well-being. This integration of food and medical freedom underscores our commitment to reducing government overreach and promoting individual choice in all aspects of life.
  • Decriminalizing Addiction: We advocate for the decriminalization of individuals with addiction issues, promoting harm reduction strategies and access to treatment rather than imposing criminal penalties. By ending the war on drugs, we recognize that criminalizing drug use has caused more harm than good and instead focus on public health approaches. To eliminate the temptation of the black market, we support regulating and decriminalizing drugs, which would reduce crime and ensure safer, controlled substances. Our emphasis is on fostering rehabilitation over incarceration, providing comprehensive support services for those struggling with addiction to help them recover and reintegrate into society.
  • Omissions: Our silence regarding any particular government policy, law, regulation, ordinance, directive, edict, control, regulatory agency ruling, or machination should not be construed as approval. We aim to articulate our top priorities, not the entirety of our positions.
