Grant Curry LaPoint (February 1, 1931—May 10, 2022) was the first Chair of the Alaska Libertarian Party. He was a write-in candidate for the 1973 special election for Congress and received almost 100 votes.
Biography
LaPoint was born on February 1, 1931 in Berlin, Connecticut, a son of William and Helen LaPoint. He served in the United States Army as a PFC Radio Operator during the Korean War. He married Christina Lazelle on July 4, 1959. He had an associates degree in engineering. He worked as a technical writer at WRLP television channel 32 in Winchester. He was in the USGOV National Geophysical yearly study in Alaska, and worked an engineer and investment manager in Costa Rica and Texas, from which he retired.
In the early 1970s, LaPoint established the Alaska Libertarian Party and served as its first Chair from 1973 to 1974. He was also Chair of the Fairbanks North Star Libertarian Party.
LaPoint was a ham radio operator and he also wrote poetry and enjoyed traveling. He lived in Washington, Costa Rica, Hawaii, Alaska, Florida, New York, and New Hampshire. In his final years, he lived in Port Angeles, Washington starting in 2000 after "falling in love with the drive up the coast." His wife, Christina, died on May 19, 2019. LaPoint died on May 10, 2022 in Point Angels at the age of 90.
