Steve Kubby, Jesse Ventura campaign manager added to Libertarian convention roster

SAN JOSE -- Steve Kubby, the 1998 Libertarian candidate for governor recently arrested on drug charges, and Doug Friedline, campaign manager for Jesse Ventura's successful gubernatorial run, have been added to the speaker's roster at the Libertarian Party of California's state convention this weekend.

The convention will be held February 12-15 at the Doubletree Hotel in San Jose.

Kubby, who was arrested along with his wife Michele in January, will hold a press conference on Sunday, February 14, at 5:45PM to discuss the charges against him. Kubby played a pivotal role on Proposition 215, the medical marijuana initiative approved in November, 1996. Kubby began taking medical marijuana after being diagnosed with adrenal cancer in 1975.

Friedline will discuss the strategy that led Ventura to the Minnesota governor's office at a banquet Sunday night, February 14. Speaking prior to Friedline will be ballot access expert Richard Winger, publisher of "Ballot Access News." The banquet will begin at 6:30PM.

Other notable speakers already confirmed:

Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association President Emeritus Joel Fox will be the featured speaker at Saturday night's dinner, February 13, starting at 6PM. Fox, whose speech is entitled "The Romance of Taxes," will address the history and future of taxation.

Cypress Semiconductor President & CEO T.J. Rodgers is the guest speaker at the annual Samuel Adams Society Luncheon on Monday, February 15, at 12 noon.

Ron Unz, the key player behind the successful bilingual education initiative Proposition 227, will discuss his favorite topic, "English for Children," at a luncheon Saturday, February 13, at 12 noon. Unz's recent appointment by Assembly Speaker Antonio Villaraigosa to the Speaker's Commission on State and Local Government Finance generated considerable controversy.

1998 Libertarian candidate for Senator of Nevada Michael Cloud will deliver the keynote address, "Personal Responsibility is the Price of Liberty," on Saturday, February 13, at 11AM.

In addition to the three dozen scheduled speakers, delegates will gather at the convention to debate changes to the state party platform and bylaws and elect state officers.
