Christopher Blaise "Chris" Garvey (May 29, 1950—July 22, 2023) was an American attorney, politician, and U.S. Merchant Marine Officer. He gained recognition as a Libertarian candidate and committee member, known for his various political campaigns in New York State. Garvey passed away on July 22, 2023, at the age of 73.

Biography

Early life and education

Christopher Garvey was born on May 29, 1950, a son of William Bledsvold Garvey (1925-2018), a veteran of World War II and Marie Joan Garvey (1921-2010).

Garvey pursued higher education at Columbia University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1972. He furthered his academic journey by attending the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law at Yeshiva University, where he obtained a Juris Doctor degree in 1981.

Legal and Political Career

Garvey embarked on a legal career that included notable positions. He worked as a Patent Attorney for Nolte, Nolte & Hunter in Roslyn, NY, a position he held from 1998 until his retirement in 2019 when the firm became Collard & Roe, P.C. His legal expertise was primarily focused on patent and trademark applications, with his work often taking him to federal and state courts.

Throughout his life, Garvey was actively involved in the political arena. He joined the National Libertarian Party on June 2, 1980, and became involved in the Libertarian Party of New York by 1995. In 1998, he ran for the position of Governor of New York State, advocating for his party's platform. He also made a bid for Attorney General of New York, running on the Libertarian line in both 2006 and 2018. Additionally, he contested the election for Suffolk County District Attorney in 2009.

Garvey's political engagement extended beyond his gubernatorial and attorney general campaigns. He also ran as a Conservative candidate for Supreme Court Justice in Bronx, NY from 2001 to 2003.

Party Leadership

Garvey served in numerous leadership positions within the Libertarian Party. He was a Member-At-Large on the State Committee starting in 1995 and served eight terms in this capacity until 1998 and then from 2006 to 2007, and 2010 to 2014. He also represented Suffolk and Nassau Counties as a county representative on the State Committee. Notably, he held the position of Vice-Chair of the LPNY from 2007 to 2008 and later served as Vice-Chair of the Nassau County Libertarian Party from 2016 to 2020.

Other Pursuits

Outside of his legal and political endeavors, Garvey was a multifaceted individual. He held the distinction of being a U.S. Merchant Marine Officer and a Sailing Instructor, showcasing his maritime interests and leadership abilities. He was also known for his involvement as a Revolutionary War reenactor with the Huntington Militia.
