Aric Cramer (March 29, 1959 – December 9, 2023) was an esteemed defense attorney based in St. George, Utah, and a notable member of the Libertarian Party. Known for his dedication to defending those charged by the government, Cramer was a firm believer in the principles enshrined in the U.S. and Utah Constitutions, advocating for a zealous defense for all accused.

Early Life and Education

Born in Denver, Colorado, to Charles “Chuck” and Nancy Cramer, Aric spent his youth pursuing adventurous activities such as climbing the highest peaks in the United States. He earned a black belt in Tae Kwan Do, was an avid weightlifter, and devoted time to coaching his sons' little league teams.

Cramer completed his Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree at North Carolina Central University School of Law in 1988 and furthered his education by obtaining a Master of Laws (LL.M.) in Taxation from the University of Denver - Sturm College of Law in 1994.

Career

Beginning his legal career as a law clerk for Larry Moss Attorney At Law in Durham, North Carolina, Cramer transitioned to a general practice attorney in the Greater Salt Lake City Area before establishing his own practice, Aric Cramer Attorney at Law, in St. George, Utah. His work encompassed various legal fields, including family law, bankruptcy, disability/workers' compensation, personal injury, and criminal law, with a particular passion for criminal defense.

In addition to his legal practice, Cramer was deeply involved in advocacy for criminal justice reform and the abolition of capital punishment. He was a life member of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL) and the Utah Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (UACDL).

Political Activism

Cramer ran as the Libertarian candidate for Lieutenant Governor of Utah in the 2010 elections. Despite not winning, his campaign highlighted issues surrounding criminal justice reform and the need for political engagement in legal advocacy.

Personal Life

Aric was known for his larger-than-life personality, often jokingly claiming to be "five feet 20 inches tall." He was deeply committed to his family, expressing immense pride in his three sons, Carter, Alex (Misty), and Aric Jr (Steph), and his grandchildren, Khloe, Vally, and Connor. Together with his life partner, Madelyn Everett, he traveled extensively to support his grandchildren in ice skating competitions.

Death

Aric M. Cramer Sr. passed away on December 9, 2023, after a brief illness at St. George Regional Hospital.
