In 2016 the Independence Party of New York endorsed Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson for President.[1] This was the first time another political party endorsed a Libertarian Presidential candidate. Gary Johnson's name will appear on the New York ballot twice, but the votes from each line will not be added together because the Independence Party submitted a slate of delegates that differed from the slate submitted by the Libertarian Party.[2] The effect of this is that Gary Johnson will be running against himself in New York.

With 431,787 registered voters in New York state, the New York Independence Party has 20,000 more registered voters in New York than the Libertarian Party does nationally.[3]
